Students and New Concord Residents Come Together on Community Day
Community Day

The Friends of New Concord hosted the inaugural New Concord Community Day from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on September 2, 2023, bringing together and strengthening the connections between ÈËÊÞÐÔ½» University students, faculty, staff, and Village residents.

The day began with a Shop Walk for ÈËÊÞÐÔ½» students, who visited participating businesses with goods or services of interest. Businesses welcomed the students – often with special promotions – and signed their Shop Walk cards, which were later entered into a drawing for one of several gift baskets.

A Vendor’s Village was open throughout the day, featuring artisans selling a variety of locally-made products such as jewelry, clothing, soaps, home décor, and cookies. Horse-drawn carriage rides through New Concord were offered, and children’s activities included a coloring contest and yard games.

Community members received free admission to ÈËÊÞÐÔ½» University’s home opener football game at 1:00 p.m., where the Fighting Muskies triumphed 31-20 over Ferrum College. The Friendship 7 a cappella group performed the National Anthem.

A free Party in the Park at the New Concord Memorial Park followed the game. Students and residents enjoyed live music performances by Fly Ohio – featuring ÈËÊÞÐÔ½»â€™s own Bill and Martha Lovejoy Professor of Biology Jim Dooley – and the Steve Spires Band. A rock-climbing wall, axe throwing, corn-hole tournaments, and other yard games added to the fun. Multiple food trucks offered dinner and dessert, and a bonfire capped off the evening.

New Concord Community Day is planned to become an annual event.
