Key of Knowledge tradition revived
During the Opening Convocation on August 28, 2018, ΘΛΚήΠΤ½» renewed the historic tradition of passing on the βKey of Knowledge.β
More than 100 years old, the large wooden key was traditionally passed from a member of the senior class to a member of the incoming class during ΘΛΚήΠΤ½»βs Opening Convocation ceremonies of the early 1900s. As times and customs changed over the years, however, the tradition stopped, and the Key was relegated to storage in the University library.
To begin the tradition anew, ΘΛΚήΠΤ½» Provost Nancy Evangelista presented the Key to Student Senate President Kayla Wilkerson β19, as the University marked the opening of the 2018-19 academic year.
βThis key represents ΘΛΚήΠΤ½» Universityβs commitment to provide you, our students, with the knowledge that will be the key to your future," Dr. Evangelista said as she presented the key. βIt will open doors to you in three ways. You will acquire the knowledge and build the skills you will need to become innovative problem-solvers and catalysts for change. You will explore diverse interests and perspectives in order to understand your own purpose. And, you will learn how to communicate and collaborate with others, in order to make your own unique impact on our world.β
