人兽性交 University honored its undergraduate class of 2019 during the University鈥檚 174th commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11. The ceremony featured an address by 人兽性交 alumnus and WNBA Coach Daniel Dean Hughes.

人兽性交 University President Dr. Susan Hasseler gave opening remarks, shared congratulations to the graduates and reminded them they will always be part of the 人兽性交 community.

鈥淵ou have earned this degree - and this celebration - through your hard work, your determination, and your pursuit of excellence,鈥� said President Hasseler. 鈥淵ou have had a tremendous impact on those around you already, and you will continue to do so in the future.鈥�

Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees were conferred to graduating 人兽性交 students. In recognition of his achievements, the University bestowed upon Mr. Hughes the honorary degree of doctor of humane letters.

鈥淭hose four years you spent here will continue to resonate in ways you don鈥檛 even imagine,鈥� said Mr. Hughes. 鈥淲hen you get to a stage of life when you鈥檙e reflecting back on it, you鈥檒l understand how moments here have influenced moments in the up and coming.鈥�

Mr. Hughes shared his undergraduate experience and provided a top 10 list of advice for the graduates to help coach their lives in the best ways possible, including to play to your strengths, actions are greater than words, to embrace the grind, and to empower others.

鈥淲hat I went through in my four years at 人兽性交 University changed the arc of my life,鈥� Mr. Hughes said. 鈥淲hen I was here, it was an incredible experience. Those four years taught me a lot, and the people here influenced me.鈥�

Mr. Hughes also expressed the importance of building relationships.

鈥淲hen you get to a more advanced stage of life, you鈥檒l remember the relationships,鈥� he said, 鈥渘ot how much money you made, not even how many wins you had. It鈥檚 about the relationships. That鈥檚 what resonates when you move through life.鈥�

After guiding the Seattle Storm to the 2018 WNBA Championship, Mr. Hughes returns for his 19th season as a WNBA head coach and his second at the helm of the Storm. He is the WNBA鈥檚 all-time leader in games coached (558) and his 263 wins are the league鈥檚 all-time third-most wins. He was twice named WNBA Coach of the Year (in 2001 and 2007) and has also served as a head coach for both the 2009 and 2018 WNBA All-Star Games.

He earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree in physical education and history from 人兽性交 in the Class of 1977 and a master鈥檚 degree in education from Miami University of Ohio. Mr. Hughes is a member of the 人兽性交 University Athletics Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Mary Regula Hughes, a member of the 人兽性交 Class of 1978, are the parents of two children and four grandchildren.

Kayla Wilkerson spoke as this year鈥檚 Class of 2019 Representative. She shared congratulations to her classmates and gave thanks to everyone in attendance for being supportive to each graduate.

鈥淭o be a graduate of 人兽性交 is to be part of something that truly makes a difference,鈥� said Wilkerson. 鈥淚 have not a single doubt of the amount of success I will hear about from all of you.鈥�

During the ceremony, the University recognized retiring faculty members Eugene Alesandrini, Joyce Alesandrini, Charles Drubel, Kenneth McCollum, Steven McGuire and Rae White. Retiring staff members Barbara Shank and Susan Fracker were also recognized.

The charge to the class from the faculty was presented by Associate Professor of Philosophy Dr. Robert Sharp, and the charge from the Board of Trustees was presented by 1962 alumnus and Chair of the Board Harold W. Burlingame. The faculty marshals were Professors Eugene Alesandrini and Joyce Alesandrini. Student Marshals were Nicholas Fulton and Carmelita Shook.
